sleep "rhythm" suggests too much regularity

I am sitting in class and, unusually for this time of day and week, I am perfectly content. I don’t do well in the morning, attitude-wise, and while I love this particular teacher, at 8 AM his beautifully soothing Alabaman accent doesn’t always help me stay awake. But this morning, by the grace of God (not the amount of sleep I’ve had, I promise you), I am awake and enjoying the class.

The wonderful thing about his classes is that, embedded in the flow of mellow vowels and cadence and gentle humour, are many gems of wisdom, polished by years of experience. Looking at 2 Corinthians today, at the goals of ministry, he said: To help people find joy in God.

Also: We are transformed by what we are preoccupied with.

  1. I'm currently reading a book on the Psalms by some guy called Walter Brueggemann and I've really had my eyes opened to a few interesting ideas and concepts that I hadn't really thought of in terms of how lamenting to God in prayer has an impact on the life of faith.

I'd share more, but I have a sermon to write on it, so I just thought I'd chime in with the whole "learning things is awesome" vibe.

Also, lack of sleep not so awesome. On this I can also concur.

Look at me not arguing! The world has gone topsy-turvy.

  2. It's like we're united in Christ or something. O.o

Will the sermon be on a certain church webpage soon?

  3. It will be, in a couple of weeks time. But it will probably be up on my blog before that, if only in written form.

I'm sure it won't compete with all the high-quality stuff you're hearing in Chicago though!

  4. If you mean it won't compete with having a street person call the police right after our Easter Sunday afternoon service (and communion), accusing another street person at the service (who'd mostly been sleeping in the pew) was stalking him, and having three cops show up within minutes, then I might have to agree with you. Those of us not "involved" were requested to be on our way to the back room where a ham dinner was being served for everyone. It was right as the first big spring thunderstorm got cranking, too. Good times.
